Tracheostomy in respiratory distress

- 1If you cannot ventilate through the stoma, attempt mouth-to-stoma rescue breaths while occluding the mouth and nose
- 2If the inner cannula is reusable, ask the caregiver to remove and clean it per their normal routine
- 3Position the patient upright; provide reassurance
- 4Suction the tracheostomy with sterile technique for no more than 10 seconds at a time
- 5If the tube is dislodged or fully obstructed, prepare to ventilate via the stoma with a BVM and mask
